Naval Gunnery Trainer
Lay it. Spot it. Hit it.
Overview
Lead the target, read the splash, hit it.
The Naval Gunnery Trainer is a browser-based simulator that trains surface and air gunnery, shore bombardment, missile employment and point defence from one fire-control console. It trains the work of a gunnery and weapons officer: building the fire-control solution, reading where the rounds fell and correcting, and deciding which weapon answers which threat. Every shell and missile is flown as an entity in the air and resolves at the intercept, never rolled at launch. It is part of the Varuni Simulation Suite.
What it does
Inside the system.
LED
Lead the target
The fire control measures the target's speed, course and turn and aims where it will be when the shell arrives.
CHN
Work the chain
Assign a tracker, wait for target data to settle, channel the gun, choose the lay and engage: the sequence a fire-control team follows before a round leaves.
SPT
Spot and correct
Every salvo is a numbered line in metres, along and across the firing line. The spot that cancels the error is read off the splash plot.
AIR
Shoot at the air
Aircraft are listed with their altitude. A gun on air alert is ready in two seconds, and missiles are flown on their own flight profiles.
NGS
Support the shore
Engage targets ashore from the gunline, or drop a virtual shore target at a chosen position, and walk the fall of shot onto it.
Stop the missile
Surface-to-air missiles, a close-in gun, chaff and flares each have a part against an inbound round, and some threats only one of them can answer.
Under the hood
Engineering depth.
What it models, by area. One console takes the trainee through the fire-control chain, shows the round in the air and keeps the record of each salvo.
FCS
Fire control and gun ballistics
The solution shows in envelope, range, time to intercept and single-shot kill probability, and a demanded kill probability sizes the salvo. Auto lay slews to the track, or lay by hand with a bearing and a range. A mount arc is enforced.
SPT
Spotting and the fall of shot
One numbered line per salvo: rounds, along and across the firing line, in metres, over and right positive. The spotting grid plots the splashes with the mean point of impact and reads out the correction. The report is kept until the game ends.
SHR
Shore fire and armour
Shore targets are ground units with damage points, judged on effective hits, so a target is neutralised over several salvos. Guns meet directional armour: an autocannon bounces off a tank's front and kills it from the rear.
Air targets and point defence
A SAM or a gun is chosen against an air target with its own kill probability. The close-in gun fires at its real cyclic rate and the magazine falls by every round, and several missiles together can saturate it.
MSL
Missiles
An authored flight profile flies the round through vertical launch, tip-over, loft, pop-up and terminal dive. A missile flies to where the target was, then looks, and mid-course uplink keeps a guided round on the live target.
DCY
Decoys and electronic warfare
Chaff and flare launchers on the console, with rounds counted, and a cloud that blooms, holds and thins faster in wind. Burnthrough, adaptive nulling and frequency hop give the seeker its answers.
Deployment
Where it runs.
The console is a web page on any operating system, with tablet layouts: nothing is installed on the training network. It runs on-premise or fully air-gapped, with the charts and the data held on your own server. Hulls, guns, missiles and magazines are library entries, not code; games, targets, weather and positions are checked against a schema before they run; doctrine is set per side.
Frequently asked
Straight answers.
What is the Naval Gunnery Trainer?
The Naval Gunnery Trainer is a browser-based simulator from Varuni Systems that trains surface and air gunnery, shore bombardment, missile employment and point defence from one fire-control console.
Who is the Naval Gunnery Trainer for?
Navies' gun, missile and point-defence training; weapons officers from the contact to the fall of shot; instructors who build, run, hold and assess a game; and training schools.
What does the Naval Gunnery Trainer model?
Fire-control solutions and the engagement chain, gun ballistics and spotting, shore bombardment, air targets, surface-to-air and anti-ship missiles on authored flight profiles, the close-in gun, and chaff and flares.
Are the rounds really flown, or is a hit decided at launch?
Every shell and missile is an entity in the air and resolves at the intercept. The trainee has to lead the target, read the splash and correct. In most games nothing fires unless the trainee fires it.
How is the Naval Gunnery Trainer deployed?
It runs in a web browser on any operating system, on-premise or fully air-gapped, with the charts and data held on your own server. Nothing is installed on the training network. It carries about 1,000 units in one exercise, at up to 100x time acceleration.
How do instructors control and replay a game?
The instructor starts, pauses and stops the game, sets the speed and the random seed, and loads another game from the picker. Each trainee account is tied to one unit; the instructor sees ground truth. A moment can be marked and rewound to, and any recorded run replays at 0.5 to 16 times speed, side by side with a second run, with tracks and events exported.
